29 Apr Climate first for South Australia
In a first for Australian States, the Government of South Australia and the City of Adelaide have signed key international climate change agreements that will assist the monitoring of greenhouse gas reduction targets and tackle climate change. The Compact of States and Regions and Compact of Mayors signed by Premier Jay Weatherill and Lord Mayor Martin Haese will facilitate annual reporting of greenhouse gas targets and emissions reduction progress to an international audience.
According to Premier Weatherill, signing the agreement which is supported by the United Nations reinforced South Australia’s continued climate change leadership. The State’s target is a 60% reduction on 1990 levels by 2050, and according to Weatherill, current data shows that they have already cut emissions by 10% compared to 1990 levels. He also noted that 40% of South Australia’s energy comes from clean sources and that they are recognised for their award winning Climate Change Adaptation Framework.
Lord Mayor Haese stated that Adelaide City Council has reduced its carbon emissions by 60% since 1994 and that the Council has committed to continuing efforts by signing the Compact of Mayors.
